About the concert

You are one of the first to hear about this newly announced performance. Join us on Sunday 22 October for the world premiere of an Australian reconstruction by Dr. Mark Smith (Adelaide) of 'The Funeral Music' for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen BWV 244a by J.S. Bach. This passion-like work is scored for SATB soloists, chamber choir, and a baroque orchestra of strings, recorders, flutes, oboes and continuo, and is considered to be a precursor to much of the music of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion.

Polyphonic Voices under its Artistic Director Michael Fulcher are delighted to be joined by the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra and a stellar line-up of vocal soloists:

  • Katherine Norman – Soprano
  • Max Riebl – Counter-Tenor
  • Robert Macfarlane – Tenor
  • Michael Leighton-Jones – Bass

Dr. Mark Smith’s work was brought to the attention of The Australian Bach Society two years ago and we are grateful to present this ‘reconstruction’, one of only four worldwide, thanks to the enthusiasm of our local musicians and the financial support of the Robert Salzer Foundation and The Australian Bach Society.
